Initially chartered in 1822, the town was an important river (Holston) shipping port. Goods originating for many miles from the surrounding countryside were loaded onto barges for the journey downriver to the Tennessee River. The bustling young town lost its charter after its downturn in fortunes precipitated by the Civil War. It was re-chartered in 1917. Kingsport was among the first cities in the early twentieth century with a modern urban design and among the first municipalities with a city manager form of government and a school system built on a model developed at Columbia University. It is an industrialized city and is the international headquarters for Eastman Chemical Company (a Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award Winner).
Bays Mountain Park - The park is nestled in the northeastern end of the Bays Mountain formation only a few miles from downtown Kingsport. Framed on all sides by mountain ridges, much of the park lies in a natural basin and is a protected haven for wildlife. Open all year, Bays Mountain beckons visitors to enjoy various activities through all seasons. A leisurely walk in the Spring may reveal over 60 kinds of wildflowers as you hear a distant grouse drumming on a log to call for a mate. Autumn in the southern Appalachians is not to be missed. Maples, sourwoods, and tulip trees come ablaze with color as migrating waterfowl pause on our lake during their southward journey. The quiet snows of winter invite cross country skiers to test their skills on our 25 miles of trails, spotting deer and wild turkey as they go. Truly, Bays Mountain Park, with something for everyone, is a park for all seasons.
Fun Fest is an annual event sponsored by the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, Fun Fest is a week long city-wide celebration. Featuring a multitude of fun, family-friendly events such as balloon chases, treasure hunts, excellent food and concerts. Fun Fest is usually held in mid to late July.
Scott Adams Memorial Skate Park - a safe, controlled facility for skateboarding - is about striking a new path for Kingsport's youth. This unique, innovative, visionary project to raise funds is the first such public/private partnership undertaking in Kingsport's history.
For many years the Kingsport Mall has been a dedicated, loyal shopping mecca to everyone who has been to Kingsport. Located at the corner of Stone Drive and Eastman Road, the mall at Kingsport is the jumping point to the world's newest clothing fashions with a large number of top-of-the-line department stores. As with the Model City, the Kingsport mall is the premier "Model Mall" and is a beacon to all good malls about something a good mall should strive to immitate.
